Local Sunshine Coaster Ashleigh Tuhkala stars in CTV’s hit reality TV show, Farming for Love. Farming for Love is based on the wildly successful Farmer Wants a Wife from Australia and the UK.
When Ashleigh’s not appearing in a national TV show, she works as a Realtor and teaches horseback riding lessons.
What is Farming for Love?
ASHLEIGH: The show features five farmers (I'm one of the farmers). We're all located in BC, but the daters are from anywhere across Canada. Farmers are matched with daters and they come to our farms. We just kind of live life on the farm and daters see if they can hack it. And we go on fun dates and then see if there's a match.
How was Ashleigh cast?
ASHLEIGH: My friend Rachel Dempster saw the casting call and sent it my way and kind of pushed me to doing it a little bit because I was like, "I don't know, I'm pretty happy single." And she's like, "No, you never know, just apply." So I did. And I loved the premise of it and that I would be in the farmer seat versus the dater seat, which is cool, and that it'd be on the farm.
Is the Sunshine Coast featured?
ASHLEIGH: You'll definitely see the Sunshine Coast quite a bit. I haven't seen the show yet, but I feel like the Coast will get showcased very nicely. It was cool to show off the hometown.

Uneven June market
There's a lot of unevenly priced housing inventory on the Sunshine Coast. I think that as the market continues into summer and people start needing to sell, we’ll see price adjustments to reflect that reality.
If sellers have a specific type of buyer in mind, AND they price their property appropriately, AND they market the listing sufficiently, they’ll find success. Sellers that think buyers are still visiting the Sunshine Coast and paying any price are going to be disappointed. The days of buyers demanding to pay more and more seem to be over (at least for the time being).
That being said, the Sunshine Coast is tracking to have a rally in June and July. Our local market is typically six to eight weeks behind the Vancouver market. That market had a busy spring so we may start to see some of that interest slosh over onto the Sunshine Coast.
Something else that partially explains our lackluster spring is that we normally don't experience back-to-back Mother's Day/Victoria Day weekends. There's typically a gap of a couple of weeks between those two holidays and buyers like to start house shopping during that in-between weekend. I think there could be some pent-up buyer demand right now, and that homes that are priced appropriately may start getting some attention over the next six weeks or so.
